Rising Tensions as Azerbaijan Warns of Retaliation After Iranian Drone Strike

A drone explodes at the airport of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, in this screengrab obtained from a social media video.

Azerbaijan has issued a firm warning that it will retaliate after two Iranian drones crossed into its Nakhchivan exclave, injuring four people and heightening fears of regional escalation. According to Azerbaijani officials, the drones entered its airspace on Thursday before striking near the Nakhchivan airport, an incident captured in eyewitness footage.

The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry condemned the attack, stating that “these attacks will not remain unanswered,” and confirmed that investigations are underway to identify the types of drones used. Authorities emphasized that response measures are being prepared to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and protect civilians.

The strike comes amid already strained relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, fueled by Baku’s deepening ties with TĂĽrkiye and Israel. The incident also raises broader concerns about the spillover of Middle East conflicts into the South Caucasus, a region where geopolitical tensions are already high.
