Shockwaves Across the Middle East as Israel Strikes Tehran After Khamenei’s Death

People mourn the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint US and Israeli strikes, at a square in Tehran on March 1, 2026.

Israel’s latest strike on Tehran has intensified an already volatile regional crisis, coming just hours after Iran launched a sweeping retaliation for the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint U.S.–Israeli attacks. The explosion in the Iranian capital sent a massive plume of smoke over the city as Israeli forces targeted what they described as strategic sites at the heart of Tehran.

Iran’s response has been fierce and far‑reaching. Following Khamenei’s death—confirmed by Iranian state media and mourned publicly across the country—Tehran unleashed waves of missiles and drones at Israeli and U.S. positions throughout the region. More than 25 coordinated strikes were reported, marking one of Iran’s most expansive military operations in years.

The conflict escalated rapidly after the initial U.S.–Israeli operation that killed Khamenei and several top Iranian security officials. The attack triggered widespread casualties across Iran, with more than 200 people reported dead in the first 24 hours. Tehran has vowed “revenge,” while Washington and Jerusalem brace for further retaliation.

Global leaders are urging restraint as fears grow that the confrontation could spiral into a broader regional war. Yet with both sides exchanging increasingly forceful blows, the path toward de‑escalation remains uncertain.
