Markets Slip as Investors Bet on Extended U.S.–Iran Ceasefire

Stocks Edge Lower as Investors Hope U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Will Hold Stocks drifted lower today as markets balanced cautious optimism over a potential extension of the U.S.–Iran ceasefire with persistent geopolitical and inflation concerns. Recent trading sessions have shown that even modest signs of diplomatic progress can meaningfully shift investor sentiment. Asian and U.S. markets rallied earlier this week on hopes that Washington and Tehran would continue negotiations, helping unwind some of the war-driven risk premiums that had pushed oil and volatility higher. U.S. Launches Major Strike on Kharg Island, Hitting Over 90 Iranian Military Targets

The United States carried out a large-scale precision strike on Iran’s Kharg Island late Friday, targeting more than 90 Iranian military sites, according to U.S. Central Command. The operation focused on naval mine storage facilities, missile bunkers, and other strategic military positions while deliberately avoiding damage to the island’s vital oil infrastructure.

Kharg Island, a critical hub responsible for the majority of Iran’s crude oil exports, has become a focal point in rising regional tensions. While the strike successfully neutralized key military assets, CENTCOM emphasized that oil facilities were preserved to prevent further destabilization of global energy markets.

Iranian state media acknowledged the attack but reported no harm to oil terminals, warning that any future threats to its energy infrastructure could provoke retaliation. The strike marks one of the most significant escalations in the ongoing conflict, underscoring the strategic importance of Kharg Island in both military and economic terms.
