Markets Slip as Investors Bet on Extended U.S.–Iran Ceasefire

Stocks Edge Lower as Investors Hope U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Will Hold Stocks drifted lower today as markets balanced cautious optimism over a potential extension of the U.S.–Iran ceasefire with persistent geopolitical and inflation concerns. Recent trading sessions have shown that even modest signs of diplomatic progress can meaningfully shift investor sentiment. Asian and U.S. markets rallied earlier this week on hopes that Washington and Tehran would continue negotiations, helping unwind some of the war-driven risk premiums that had pushed oil and volatility higher. Russia Claims Complete Control of Luhansk as Tensions Deepen

Pro-Russian troops drive an armoured vehicle through the town of Popasna in the Luhansk region, Ukraine

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that its forces have taken full control of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, marking what Moscow describes as the “liberation” of the territory. The claim suggests Russian troops have secured the final areas that had remained outside their grasp since 2022.

According to Russian officials, units from the “West” military grouping completed operations across the region, which Russia has referred to as the Luhansk People’s Republic. Independent verification of the battlefield situation remains unavailable, and Ukrainian authorities have not yet issued a response.

Luhansk, together with Donetsk, forms the industrial Donbas region—an area central to the conflict since Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Kremlin has reiterated demands for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from remaining parts of Donetsk not under Russian control, a condition Kyiv continues to reject.

The announcement comes amid broader reports of Russian advances in other regions, including Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, though these claims also remain unverified. The development is expected to further escalate tensions in a conflict that has drawn widespread international scrutiny.
