Canada Groceries & Essentials Benefit: Free Money Hits Your Account June 5 — Are You Getting Yours?

If you're a low- or modest-income Canadian, there's a very good chance the government is about to deposit money directly into your bank account — on June 5, 2026 — with zero application required.

It's called the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB), and it's replacing the old GST/HST credit with a bigger, better payout. The first step? A one-time bonus payment arriving in less than two weeks. Here's everything you need to know to make sure you don't miss it.

What Exactly Is This Payment?

The federal government is transitioning away from the GST/HST Credit and launching the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) starting July 2026. As a bridge to that new program, every current GST/HST credit recipient will receive a one-time lump-sum top-up on June 5, 2026 — equal to 50% of their annual 2025–26 GST/HST credit.

Think of it as a bonus cheque (or direct deposit) to help you cover rising grocery and essentials costs right now, before the new quarterly payments kick in.

⚠️ Heads Up

When the payment arrives, your bank account may still show it labelled as "GST/HST Credit" — don't be confused. It's the same money from the same program, just under the old name during the transition.

How Much Will You Receive?

Your exact amount depends on your household income and family size, based on your 2024 tax return. Here are some real-world examples from the CRA:

Household TypeNet IncomeJune 5 Top-UpAnnual 2026–27 (CGEB)
Single personUnder ~$35,000~$267Up to $950
Single seniorUnder $25,000~$267Up to $950
Couple, no childrenUnder ~$45,000~$350Varies by income
Family of four~$40,000$533Up to $1,890

Note: These are approximate figures. Your exact amount is calculated by the CRA based on your filed 2024 return.

Do You Qualify? Here's Who Gets Paid

The good news: no application is needed for most Canadians. The CRA automatically determines your eligibility when you file your taxes. You qualify if:

  • You filed your 2024 income tax return
  • You were entitled to receive the GST/HST credit in January 2026
  • You are a Canadian resident with low or modest income
  • You (or your spouse/common-law partner) are 19 years or older, or have/had children
💡 Seniors: Don't Miss Out!

Many seniors who only receive OAS or GIS skip filing taxes thinking they don't need to. This is the most common reason eligible people miss the payment. If you haven't filed your 2024 return yet, call CRA's freeFile My Returnservice at1-800-959-1110as soon as possible — a single phone call could mean up to $950 in your pocket.

4 Things to Do Before June 5

  1. File your 2024 tax return — even if you had little or no income. This is the #1 requirement to receive the payment.
  2. Set up direct deposit with the CRA via your My Account to get paid faster and avoid cheque delays.
  3. Confirm your address is up to date with the CRA if you've moved recently.
  4. Tell someone you know who might qualify — seniors, low-income individuals, and new residents often miss out simply because they weren't aware.

What Comes After June 5? The New CGEB Explained

The June 5 payment is just the beginning. Starting July 3, 2026, the old GST/HST credit officially becomes the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit — and the quarterly payments get a permanent 25% raise that grows for five years straight.

Payment DateWhat It Is
June 5, 2026One-time top-up (50% of annual GST credit)
July 3, 2026First CGEB quarterly payment (25% higher than before)
October 5, 2026Second CGEB quarterly payment
2026–203125% annual increase each year for 5 years

And the best part? It's completely tax-free. The money does not count as income and won't affect other benefits like OAS, GIS, or the Canada Child Benefit.

Why This Matters: Groceries Are More Expensive Than Ever

This benefit comes at a critical time for Canadian households. Since 2020, grocery prices have climbed faster than overall inflation — the average Canadian household now spends $782 more per year on food than before the pandemic. Beef prices alone are up 19%, with poultry, coffee, and eggs also seeing steep increases.

For many families, this payment won't fully cover those extra costs — but it's money you're entitled to, and it's arriving just in time to ease the summer grocery budget crunch.
