Trade Tensions Rise as EU Prepares Retaliation Against U.S. Tariff Hike

The European Union has strongly condemned President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, warning of swift countermeasures that could escalate global trade tensions. Announced Friday near Pittsburgh, Trump raised existing steel and aluminum tariffs from 25% to 50%, aiming to protect U.S. industry and bolster a $14.9 billion Nippon Steel–U.S. Steel deal. The European Commission responded sharply, calling the move a threat to transatlantic economic stability and global supply chains. “This decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” a spokesperson said. The EU is finalizing consultations on expanded retaliatory tariffs, set to take effect by July 14 unless a negotiated solution is reached. The reaction from global trade partners was swift. Hunger Worsens in Gaza as Palestinians Begin Ramadan

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have commenced the holy month of Ramadan under dire circumstances. With no end to the ongoing conflict in sight, hunger continues to worsen across the region, placing immense pressure on Israel to address the growing humanitarian crisis.

The situation in Gaza remains critical. The war between Israel and Hamas, which began five months ago, has resulted in devastating consequences for civilians. Approximately 80% of Gaza’s population—around 2.3 million people—have been displaced from their homes, and hundreds of thousands are on the brink of famine. The conflict has claimed the lives of at least 31,112 Palestinians, with women and children comprising two-thirds of the casualties.

As Palestinians observe Ramadan, the fasting month of dawn-to-dusk, they face not only the physical challenges of hunger but also the emotional toll of living in a war-torn region. The United States, Qatar, and Egypt had hoped to broker a cease-fire ahead of Ramadan, aiming for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, along with increased humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, talks stalled last week, leaving the situation unresolved.

The international community closely watches the unfolding crisis. The Spanish aid ship carrying 200 metric tons of supplies is set to sail from Cyprus, providing much-needed relief to the suffering population. However, urgent action is required to alleviate the hunger and address the broader humanitarian emergency in Gaza.

As the world observes Ramadan, let us remember those facing adversity and extend our compassion and support to the people of Gaza during these challenging times.
