Alberta Stands Alone: Refuses to Sign Joint Statement on Trump Tariffs

In a surprising turn of events, Alberta has refused to sign a joint statement from the first ministers' meeting regarding the Trump administration's proposed tariffs on Canadian goods. Premier Danielle Smith, who attended the meeting virtually, stated that Alberta cannot support the federal government's plan if it includes energy export tariffs.  The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, aimed to present a united front against the U.S. tariff threats. However, Smith's refusal to sign the statement has highlighted the province's unique concerns about the potential impact on its energy sector. Alberta's oil and gas industry, which is Canada's largest export to the U.S., could face significant financial pressure if the tariffs are implemented. Escalation in Gaza: Dozens Killed Amid Intensified Bombardment

Israeli forces have intensified their bombardment across the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 Palestinians, according to health officials. The escalation has seen tanks advancing deeper into western and northern Rafah, with fierce gun battles reported between Israeli troops and Hamas fighters.

Among the casualties was local journalist Mohammad Abu Jasser, who, along with his wife and two children, was killed in an Israeli strike on their home in the northern Gaza Strip. This brings the total number of Palestinian media personnel killed since October 7 to 161, as reported by Gaza’s Hamas-run government media office.

The Israeli military has conducted multiple strikes across Gaza, targeting what it claims are militant infrastructures. In central Gaza, an airstrike on a multi-floor building in Al-Nuseirat camp wounded several people, including two local journalists. In Rafah, Israeli forces have taken control of strategic positions, aiming to dismantle the last battalions of Hamas’ armed wing.

Efforts for a ceasefire, led by Qatar and Egypt and supported by the United States, have so far failed due to ongoing disputes between the combatants. The conflict, which began after a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with over 38,919 Palestinians and 326 Israeli soldiers reported killed.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange fire, with no immediate resolution in sight.
