Ottawa Backs Down on Digital Tax Dispute Amid Pressure from Trump White House

Canada has reportedly agreed to delay its planned digital services tax (DST) following pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, according to a recent statement from the White House. The tax, which was originally slated to target tech giants like Amazon, Meta, and Google, had been a major sticking point in U.S.-Canada trade discussions. Iran Rejects European Appeals for Restraint Amid Middle East Tensions

Iran has firmly dismissed calls from France, Germany, and Britain urging restraint in its response to recent tensions with Israel. The Iranian foreign ministry criticized these appeals as lacking political logic and contradicting principles of international law.

The European nations issued their statement following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, in Tehran last month. Tehran, along with its allies Hamas and Hezbollah, has accused Israel of orchestrating the assassination, although Israel has not claimed responsibility.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, emphasized that Iran is determined to deter Israel and called on European nations to oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza. Kanaani also criticized the United Nations Security Council and Western governments for their support of Israel, which he claimed exacerbates the regional crisis.

The situation remains tense as Iran insists on its right to respond to what it views as violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
