Canada Post Resumes Operations Tuesday After Month-Long Strike

After more than a month of halted operations, Canada Post announced that mail services will resume on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. The decision follows a ruling by the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), which declared an impasse in negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

The CIRB ordered the nearly 55,000 striking workers to return to work under their existing contracts, which have been extended until May 22, 2025, to allow for continued bargaining. In the interim, Canada Post has agreed to a five percent wage increase, retroactive to the day after the collective agreements expired.

The resumption of services comes as a relief to businesses and individuals who have been scrambling for alternative delivery methods during the busy holiday season. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon emphasized the importance of the postal service, especially for small businesses, remote communities, and Indigenous people.

Canada Post looks forward to welcoming its employees back and resuming its commitment to serving Canadians and businesses across the country.
