A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot Monday afternoon on Interstate 91 in northern Vermont, south of the Canadian border. The agent, assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, was killed in the line of duty, according to the FBI and Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. EST in Coventry, approximately 20 miles (32 km) from the Canadian border. In addition to the agent, a suspect was also killed, and another individual was injured and taken into custody. The FBI confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The Swanton Sector encompasses Vermont, parts of New York, and New Hampshire, covering 295 miles (475 kilometers) of the international boundary with Canada. Huffman emphasized that Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm's way daily to ensure the safety and security of Americans.

The Vermont State Police, along with federal authorities, are investigating the incident. Huffman assured that the investigation would be swift and thorough.

The community and officials have extended their condolences to the agent's family, loved ones, and colleagues. Vermont's Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Peter Welch, and Rep. Becca Balint also expressed their support for Border Patrol agents, emphasizing the need for adequate staffing, pay, and working conditions.

The northbound lane of Interstate 91 reopened shortly after 5 p.m., while the southbound lane remained closed for an extended period.
