Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Meanwhile, Italy has imposed restrictions on outdoor work , particularly in agriculture and construction, during the hottest parts of the day. Cities like Rome, Milan, and Venice are under red alerts, with hospitals reporting a spike in heat-related illnesses. The Mediterranean Sea has also hit record highs, with waters in Spain’s Balearic Sea reaching 30°C , up to 6 degrees above average. Tragic Incident: U.S. Border Patrol Agent Fatally Shot in Vermont

 

 A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot Monday afternoon on Interstate 91 in northern Vermont, south of the Canadian border. The agent, assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, was killed in the line of duty, according to the FBI and Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. EST in Coventry, approximately 20 miles (32 km) from the Canadian border. In addition to the agent, a suspect was also killed, and another individual was injured and taken into custody. The FBI confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The Swanton Sector encompasses Vermont, parts of New York, and New Hampshire, covering 295 miles (475 kilometers) of the international boundary with Canada. Huffman emphasized that Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm's way daily to ensure the safety and security of Americans.

The Vermont State Police, along with federal authorities, are investigating the incident. Huffman assured that the investigation would be swift and thorough.

The community and officials have extended their condolences to the agent's family, loved ones, and colleagues. Vermont's Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Peter Welch, and Rep. Becca Balint also expressed their support for Border Patrol agents, emphasizing the need for adequate staffing, pay, and working conditions.

The northbound lane of Interstate 91 reopened shortly after 5 p.m., while the southbound lane remained closed for an extended period.
