Canada Stands Firm Against U.S. Auto Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's newly announced 25% tariff on foreign-made vehicles, calling it "a direct attack" on Canada and its auto workers. Speaking at the iconic Ambassador Bridge, Carney emphasized the deep economic and cultural ties between the two nations, which he said are now under strain.

The tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, are part of Trump's broader strategy to incentivize domestic manufacturing. However, Carney warned that these measures would disrupt the tightly integrated North American auto industry, where parts often cross borders multiple times during production. He vowed to defend Canadian workers and companies, promising retaliatory measures and support for affected industries.

Carney also unveiled a $2 billion "strategic response fund" aimed at bolstering Canada's auto sector. The fund will focus on enhancing competitiveness, protecting jobs, and creating a robust domestic supply chain to reduce reliance on cross-border trade.

As tensions rise, Carney's message was clear: Canada will stand united in defending its workers and industries against what he described as unjustified trade actions.
