Alberta Premier Defends Legal Oversight in Health Probe Amid NDP Criticism

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has faced mounting pressure from the Opposition NDP to remove lawyers from the ongoing health contract investigation process. The controversy stems from the government's directive requiring public servants to coordinate with lawyers when responding to requests from Auditor General Doug Wylie.

Smith has defended the policy, stating that it is designed to streamline the process and ensure the auditor general has access to the necessary documents and interviews. She dismissed the NDP's claims of a "gag order" as misrepresentations, emphasizing that the policy aims to facilitate, not obstruct, the investigation.

The NDP, led by Christina Gray, has criticized the move, suggesting it creates an appearance of a cover-up. Gray also pointed out that the government falsely claimed the process was standard and endorsed by the auditor general, a claim refuted by Wylie himself.

Smith has directed her justice minister to ensure full cooperation with the investigation. However, the controversy continues to grow, with critics, including members of Smith's own caucus, labeling the policy as "obstructionist." The debate highlights the political tensions surrounding the probe into multimillion-dollar health contracts.
