Trade Tensions Rise as EU Prepares Retaliation Against U.S. Tariff Hike

The European Union has strongly condemned President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, warning of swift countermeasures that could escalate global trade tensions. Announced Friday near Pittsburgh, Trump raised existing steel and aluminum tariffs from 25% to 50%, aiming to protect U.S. industry and bolster a $14.9 billion Nippon Steel–U.S. Steel deal. The European Commission responded sharply, calling the move a threat to transatlantic economic stability and global supply chains. “This decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs for consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” a spokesperson said. Trump Faces Declining Approval Amid Controversial Policies

President Donald Trump's approval rating has dropped to its lowest point since his return to the White House, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey revealed that only 42% of respondents approved of his performance, a decline from 43% in the previous poll and 47% shortly after his inauguration.

The poll highlights growing public concern over Trump's efforts to expand his executive powers. Controversial actions, such as freezing federal funding for universities he deems too liberal and attempting to exert control over cultural institutions like the Kennedy Center, have sparked widespread criticism. Additionally, 83% of respondents believe the president must adhere to federal court rulings, even if he disagrees with them.

On key issues like immigration, taxation, and the rule of law, more Americans disapprove of Trump's performance than approve. Notably, 59% of respondents, including a third of Republicans, expressed concerns about the U.S. losing credibility on the global stage.

The poll also revealed that three-quarters of Americans oppose Trump running for a third term, a sentiment shared by a majority of Republican respondents. Despite these challenges, Trump's approval rating remains higher than the lowest ratings of his predecessor, Joe Biden.
