Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Canada Post Union Imposes Overtime Ban Amid Ongoing Negotiations

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has announced a nationwide overtime ban, instructing its members to refuse work beyond eight hours per day and 40 hours per week. This move comes as negotiations between CUPW and Canada Post continue without a resolution.

The union's decision follows a Thursday evening meeting with Canada Post representatives, which lasted less than half an hour and failed to make meaningful progress. CUPW has expressed dissatisfaction with the latest contract offers, citing concerns over wages and part-time work conditions. Workers are seeking a 19% wage increase, arguing that inflation has significantly impacted their earnings.

Canada Post has warned that while operations will continue, customers may experience delays due to the overtime restrictions. The postal service has urged the union to return to negotiations with urgency.

This latest development adds to the financial struggles of Canada Post, which has reported significant losses in recent years. If the dispute escalates into a full strike, it could disrupt mail and parcel deliveries nationwide, affecting millions of Canadians.
