Canadian Consumers Brace for Price Hikes as Trade War Escalates
As the trade war between Canada and the U.S. intensifies, shoppers across the country are beginning to feel the financial strain. Major retailers, including Loblaw and Walmart, have warned that prices on thousands of products will rise as tariffs and counter-tariffs take effect.
Loblaw CEO Per Bank revealed that the number of tariff-affected items in their stores is set to triple in the coming weeks, potentially reaching 6,000 products within two months. Categories such as pantry staples, health and beauty products, and natural foods will see noticeable price increases.
Independent grocers are also struggling to find alternative suppliers, with industry experts noting that replacing U.S. imports is not a quick or simple process. Many businesses operate on slim profit margins, meaning they have little choice but to pass the additional costs onto consumers.
While the Canadian government has adjusted some counter-tariff policies to ease the burden, shoppers should prepare for higher costs at checkout. With no immediate resolution in sight, Canadians may need to rethink their shopping habits and explore more locally sourced alternatives.
