Market Volatility: Stocks Flatten as Powell's Remarks Weigh on Gains

The stock market experienced a turbulent session on Wednesday, ultimately closing near flat after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's comments on monetary policy and inflation concerns. The S&P 500 ended nearly unchanged , giving back earlier gains as investors digested Powell’s remarks on the Fed’s stance regarding interest rates and economic restraint. Powell reiterated that the central bank remains cautious about inflation, particularly in light of tariff-driven price increases expected over the summer. While the Fed signaled that borrowing costs are likely to decline this year, the pace of future rate cuts appears to be slowing.  Following Powell’s speech, U.S. Treasury yields reversed their earlier declines , influencing market sentiment. Carney's Cabinet Convenes: A New Era Begins in Canadian Politics

 Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to hold his first meeting with his newly appointed cabinet this morning on Parliament Hill. This gathering marks the beginning of a new chapter in Canadian governance following a significant cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.  

Carney's new team consists of 28 full ministers and 10 secretaries of state, with half of the ministers being new to the front bench. The prime minister has emphasized a balance between fresh perspectives and experienced leadership as his government prepares to move forward with "urgency and determination".  

Among the key priorities outlined by Carney are strengthening Canada-U.S. relations, building a unified Canadian economy, and advancing nation-building investments to position Canada as a leading force in the G7.  

Parliament is set to resume on May 26, with Carney promising swift action on his government's commitments. As his cabinet convenes for the first time, all eyes will be on how this new team navigates the challenges ahead.
