Trade Tensions Rise as EU Prepares Retaliation Against U.S. Tariff Hike

The European Union has strongly condemned President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, warning of swift countermeasures that could escalate global trade tensions. Announced Friday near Pittsburgh, Trump raised existing steel and aluminum tariffs from 25% to 50%, aiming to protect U.S. industry and bolster a $14.9 billion Nippon Steel–U.S. Steel deal. Diplomatic Dance: Carney and Trump Meet Without Major Shifts

Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump met at the White House for their first face-to-face discussion since Carney’s election victory. While the meeting was expected to address key issues such as trade and military cooperation, no significant breakthroughs or conflicts emerged.

Trump reiterated his controversial stance on Canada potentially becoming the 51st U.S. state, calling it a “beautiful marriage,” but Carney firmly dismissed the idea, stating that Canada is “never for sale”. The leaders also touched on trade negotiations, with Carney emphasizing that the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) would serve as a foundation for future discussions.

Despite Trump’s continued tariffs on Canadian goods, the meeting remained cordial, with both leaders agreeing to further talks in the coming months. While no major policy shifts were announced, the meeting set the stage for ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
