Pope Leo XIV Calls for Global Peace in First Sunday Address

In his first Sunday message since ascending to the papacy, Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt appeal for peace, urging world leaders to put an end to war and conflict. Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the newly elected pontiff called for an "authentic and lasting peace" in Ukraine, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of all Israeli hostages.

Echoing the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo XIV lamented the ongoing violence across the globe, describing the current state of affairs as a "third world war in pieces." He emphasized the need for diplomacy and humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering, particularly in war-torn regions.

The pope also welcomed the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that negotiations would lead to a lasting accord between the nuclear-armed neighbors. "But there are so many other conflicts in the world!" he exclaimed, urging leaders to prioritize peace and reconciliation.

Leo XIV’s message resonated deeply with the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, many of whom waved flags and symbols of faith in solidarity with his call for peace. His words mark a significant moment in his early papacy, setting the tone for his leadership as a champion of global harmony and justice.
