Tsunami Alert Issued After Powerful Earthquake Strikes Off Chile’s Coast

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica on Friday, prompting a tsunami alert for Chile’s southern coast. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of just 10 km (6 miles).

Chile’s*SENAPRED disaster agency issued an evacuation order for the Magallanes region urging residents to move away from coastal areas due to the tsunami risk. President Gabriel Boric emphasized that all state resources would be mobilized to address potential impacts.

Videos circulating on social media showed calm evacuations, with sirens blaring in the background. Chile’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) estimated that waves could reach bases in Antarctica and cities in Chile’s extreme south in the coming hours.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising residents to remain vigilant and follow official guidance. Further updates are expected as emergency teams assess the impact of the earthquake and potential tsunami waves.
