Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Uncertainty Clouds Ukraine-Russia Talks as Putin Skips Meeting

The latest attempt at peace talks between Ukraine and Russia has been thrown into disarray following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s absence from the negotiations in Turkey. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had publicly challenged Putin to attend the talks in person, but the Kremlin instead sent a delegation of aides and deputy ministers.

Zelenskiy, who arrived in Ankara for discussions with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, described the Russian delegation as "decorative" and questioned whether they had the authority to make meaningful decisions. The absence of Putin has led to confusion over the next steps, with Ukraine yet to confirm its participation in the talks scheduled to take place in Istanbul.

The diplomatic uncertainty comes as both sides attempt to demonstrate their commitment to peace, particularly under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has urged an end to what he calls "this stupid war". Washington has warned that it may withdraw its mediation efforts if no progress is made.

With expectations for a breakthrough now significantly lowered, Zelenskiy has reiterated his call for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, while Putin has insisted that discussions on the details of such a truce must take place first. As the world watches, the future of the negotiations remains uncertain.
