Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Western Nations Warn Israel Over Gaza Offensive

In a significant diplomatic move, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France have issued a stern warning to Israel, urging it to halt its renewed military offensive in Gaza and lift restrictions on humanitarian aid. The leaders of these nations stated that Israel’s denial of essential assistance to civilians risks breaching international humanitarian law and could prompt further action, including targeted sanctions.

The warning comes amid escalating tensions, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his intent to take control of the entire Gaza Strip. The Israeli military recently launched a new operation, prompting concerns from international experts about a looming famine in the region.

The joint statement from Canada, the U.K., and France emphasized their opposition to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and reaffirmed their commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution. They also expressed support for ongoing ceasefire negotiations led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.

Despite mounting pressure, Israel has maintained its blockade on medical, food, and fuel supplies to Gaza since March, aiming to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli communities. However, Western leaders argue that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached an unacceptable level, necessitating immediate intervention.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community watches closely to see whether Israel will heed the warnings or face potential sanctions from its Western allies.
