Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Meanwhile, Italy has imposed restrictions on outdoor work , particularly in agriculture and construction, during the hottest parts of the day. Deadly Russian Airstrike Devastates Kyiv, Killing Four

In a harrowing overnight assault, Russian forces launched a barrage of missiles and drones on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing at least four people and injuring 20 others. The attack, which sent powerful explosions reverberating across the city, followed a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow would retaliate after Ukrainian drones destroyed several Russian strategic bombers.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the casualties, stating that 16 of the injured were hospitalized. The city’s metro system suffered disruptions after a Russian strike damaged train tracks between stations, further complicating rescue efforts. In the Solomianskyi district, a Russian drone slammed into an apartment building, leaving a gaping hole and crushing cars parked below.

Residents sought shelter in underground parking lots and metro stations as Ukrainian air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming threats. The Ukrainian air force reported that the country had been targeted with drones and missiles, with additional strikes hitting industrial facilities in the western city of Ternopil, leaving parts of it without power.

The attack comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations, with Ukrainian forces recently carrying out one of their most audacious strikes on Russian air bases using quadcopter drones. As the conflict intensifies, global leaders continue to push for diplomatic solutions, though peace remains elusive.
