Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Meanwhile, Italy has imposed restrictions on outdoor work , particularly in agriculture and construction, during the hottest parts of the day. Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza Aid Vessel Carrying Greta Thunberg

Israeli naval forces seized the British-flagged yacht Madleen early Monday as it attempted to break the naval blockade of Gaza. The vessel, operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was carrying a symbolic amount of humanitarian aid and aimed to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Among the 12-member crew was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, alongside other international figures, including French Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that all passengers were safe and would be returned to their home countries.

The interception occurred in international waters, according to Hassan, who posted on social media that the crew had been arrested around 2 a.m. A photograph showed the activists seated on the boat, wearing life jackets with their hands raised.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had ordered the military to prevent the vessel from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas. The Israeli government maintains that the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching the militant group.

The United Nations has warned that Gaza’s population is facing famine, with over 54,000 Palestinians reported killed since the start of Israel’s military campaign. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition vowed to continue its efforts, urging other vessels to challenge the blockade in solidarity with Gaza.
