Europe Scorched by Record Heatwave: France and Italy Take Emergency Measures

As a blistering heatwave tightens its grip on Europe, countries are scrambling to protect citizens from soaring temperatures and mounting health risks. France has shuttered over 1,350 schools  and closed the top floor of the Eiffel Tower as temperatures surged past 40°C (104°F)  in several regions. Sixteen French departments are now under the highest heat alert, with authorities urging people to stay hydrated and indoors during peak hours. Medvedev: Peace Talks Should Secure Russian Victory, Not Compromise

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has stated that any future peace talks regarding the conflict in Ukraine should focus on securing a swift and decisive Russian victory, rather than engaging in negotiation or compromise. His remarks reflect Moscow’s hardened stance as the war enters its third year.

“Peace negotiations must aim to consolidate our gains and guarantee Russia’s interests,” Medvedev said, according to Russian state media. He added that dialogue for the sake of diplomacy alone is “meaningless” if it does not align with Russia’s strategic goals.

Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, has increasingly adopted a hawkish tone since the invasion began in February 2022. His comments come amid ongoing Western efforts to encourage diplomatic resolutions, including recent calls from international leaders for renewed ceasefire discussions.

Ukraine has rejected any negotiations that involve territorial concessions, while Russia insists that regions it claims to have annexed—such as Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—are non-negotiable.

Medvedev’s statement underlines the Kremlin’s unwillingness to make concessions, further complicating prospects for peace.
