New Bay or Legal Grey? B.C. Billionaire Faces Trademark Challenge Over Hudson’s Bay Rebrand
B.C. billionaire Weihong Liu has made headlines with her acquisition of 28 Hudson’s Bay leases, aiming to revamp the department store experience under the name New Bay. However, her ambitious plans come with a legal hurdle—Canadian Tire recently secured the intellectual property rights to Hudson’s Bay’s branding, including its name, logos, and iconic stripes, for $30 million.
Legal experts warn that Liu’s proposed New Bay name could be deemed “confusingly similar” to Hudson’s Bay, potentially infringing on established trademarks. If challenged, Liu may need to reconsider her branding strategy or face legal action.
Despite the uncertainty, Liu remains committed to revitalizing the retail spaces, hiring former Hudson’s Bay employees, and introducing a modern department store concept. Whether New Bay will survive the legal scrutiny or require a rebrand remains to be seen.
