Ottawa Backs Down on Digital Tax Dispute Amid Pressure from Trump White House

Canada has reportedly agreed to delay its planned digital services tax (DST) following pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, according to a recent statement from the White House. The tax, which was originally slated to target tech giants like Amazon, Meta, and Google, had been a major sticking point in U.S.-Canada trade discussions. The White House claimed Canada “caved” to U.S. demands after months of negotiations, with Trump’s team arguing the tax unfairly targeted American firms. The Canadian government, however, framed the delay as a strategic move to preserve economic stability and avoid retaliatory tariffs. Ukraine Endures Largest Russian Aerial Assault Since War Began

In the early hours of Sunday, Ukraine faced its most intense aerial bombardment since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched a staggering 537 aerial weapons, including 477 drones and 60 missiles, targeting multiple regions across the country.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that 249 drones and 38 missiles were successfully intercepted, while others were either electronically jammed or missed their targets. Despite these defenses, the assault caused widespread damage. Residential buildings, industrial facilities, and critical infrastructure in regions such as Lviv, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk were hit.

Tragically, the attack claimed several lives, including that of a Ukrainian F-16 pilot who managed to down seven air targets before his aircraft was fatally damaged. At least a dozen civilians, including children, were reported dead or injured.

The scale and reach of the attack—striking areas far from the front lines—underscore a sharp escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign. While President Putin recently expressed openness to renewed peace talks in Istanbul, the ferocity of this latest strike casts doubt on the sincerity of those overtures.

This overnight barrage not only deepens the humanitarian crisis but also signals a troubling new phase in the conflict, as both sides continue to test the limits of modern warfare.
