Greece’s Asylum Freeze Sparks Global Outcry Amid Crete Migrant Surge

In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from human rights organizations and the United Nations, Greece has passed legislation temporarily halting asylum applications from migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. The three-month suspension, approved by parliament with 177 votes in favor and 74 against, allows for expedited repatriation without prior identification. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the measure as a “difficult but necessary decision” in response to a sharp rise in irregular arrivals, particularly from Libya to the island of Crete. Over 7,000 migrants have reached Crete and nearby Gavdos this year, straining local resources and prompting concerns from the tourism industry. Paramount Settles Trump Lawsuit Over *60 Minutes* Interview for $16 Million

Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, has agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump over an edited 60 Minutes interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris. The settlement, announced July 1, comes amid heightened scrutiny of media practices and political influence.

Trump originally filed the lawsuit in October, alleging that CBS deceptively edited Harris’s responses to questions about the Israel-Hamas conflict, thereby skewing public perception during the 2024 presidential campaign. The lawsuit claimed the edits violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and sought up to $20 billion in damages.

Under the terms of the settlement, the funds will be directed to Trump’s future presidential library—not to him personally. Paramount issued no apology or admission of wrongdoing, maintaining that the edits were consistent with standard editorial practices.

The case had entered mediation in April and was closely watched due to its implications for press freedom and editorial independence. It also coincides with Paramount’s pending $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media, which requires federal approval.

This marks the third major media settlement involving Trump in recent months, following similar agreements with ABC News and Meta Platforms.
