Trudeau Condemns Violence at Montreal NATO Protest as "Appalling"

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has strongly condemned the violence that erupted during ongoing anti-NATO protests in Montreal, calling the scenes “appalling” and urging for peaceful demonstrations. The protests, which began as a rally against Canada’s involvement in NATO, escalated when a small group of demonstrators clashed with police, leading to arrests and property damage.

“While Canadians have the right to express their views and protest, violence and destruction have no place in our society,” Trudeau said in a statement. He also expressed support for law enforcement working to maintain public safety amid the unrest.

The demonstrations are part of a broader movement opposing NATO’s military activities and Canada’s defense spending commitments. Protesters argue that funds allocated for NATO could be better used for domestic priorities, such as healthcare and housing.

Montreal police have reported multiple arrests and are investigating incidents of vandalism and assault. Meanwhile, city officials have called for calm and urged protesters to voice their concerns without resorting to aggression.

The protests and Trudeau's remarks come amid growing public debate over Canada’s role in NATO and its broader foreign policy commitments.
