US Approves Use of Antipersonnel Land Mines by Ukraine Against Russian Forces

In a significant policy shift, the Biden administration has authorized Ukraine to deploy American-supplied antipersonnel land mines in its ongoing conflict with Russian forces. This decision was announced by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a visit to Laos.

The change comes in response to evolving tactics on the battlefield, with Russian ground troops increasingly leading movements. Secretary Austin emphasized that the land mines provided to Ukraine will be non-persistent, meaning they can be controlled to self-deactivate, reducing long-term risks.

This move is part of a broader strategy to bolster Ukraine’s defenses as the conflict enters a more intense phase. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has also issued warnings of potential significant Russian air attacks, prompting temporary closures of several Western embassies in the city.

The decision has sparked discussions about the implications for both the battlefield and international relations, as the war in Ukraine continues to escalate.
