Austria Triumphs at Eurovision 2025 Amid Controversy, as UK Faces Another Setback

Austria has claimed victory at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest, held in Basel, Switzerland, with singer Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ, securing the win with his emotional ballad Wasted Love. The 24-year-old countertenor, who has performed at the Vienna State Opera, amassed 436 points, narrowly beating Israel’s Yuval Raphael, who finished second with 357 points. Estonia’s Tommy Cash took third place with 356 points, followed by Sweden’s KAJ and Italy’s Lucio Corsi.

JJ’s heartfelt performance resonated with both the jury and the public, earning Austria its third Eurovision victory, following wins in 1966 and 2014. Accepting his trophy, JJ expressed gratitude, saying, “Love is the strongest force in the world, let’s spread more love.

However, the contest was not without controversy. Protests erupted over Israel’s participation, with demonstrators calling for the country’s exclusion due to ongoing conflicts in Gaza. During Raphael’s performance, two individuals attempted to storm the stage, throwing paint at a crew member before being removed by security.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom faced another disappointing result, finishing 19th with 88 points. The UK’s entry, Remember Monday, received zero points from the public vote, marking the second consecutive year of such a setback. Despite the group’s energetic performance of What the Hell Just Happened?, the UK struggled to gain traction among voters.

The event, hosted by Hazel Brugger, Sandra Studer, and Michelle Hunziker, brought Eurovision back to Switzerland, where the contest first began. While fans speculated about a surprise appearance from Celine Dion, the former Eurovision winner did not perform.

With Austria’s victory, the country will now prepare to host Eurovision 2026, promising another spectacular showcase of musical talent and cultural diversity.
