Mark Carney Lands in Rome for Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in Rome, Italy, ahead of the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV Carney, a devout Cathol, touched down in the Italian capital on Saturday morning, following an overnight flight from Ottawa

Upon arrival, Carney was greeted by Canadian Ambassador to Italy Elissa Goldberg, Canada’s Ambassador to the Holy See Joyce Napier, and officials from the Italian government and the Vatican. His visit marks his first official trip to the Vatican, as he was unable to attend the funeral of Pope Francis due to the Canadian federal election

Carney is expected to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Italian President Sergio Mattarella later in the day, with discussions likely to focus on trade, commerce, and cultural ties ahead of the G7 summit in Canada next month

Accompanying Carney is a delegation of 13 Liberal MPs, including former cabinet minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and Ottawa MPs Mona Fortier and Marie-France Lalonde.
