Mark Carney Lands in Rome for Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in Rome, Italy, ahead of the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV Carney, a devout Cathol, touched down in the Italian capital on Saturday morning, following an overnight flight from Ottawa.
Upon arrival, Carney was greeted by Canadian Ambassador to Italy Elissa Goldberg, Canada’s Ambassador to the Holy See Joyce Napier, and officials from the Italian government and the Vatican. His visit marks his first official trip to the Vatican, as he was unable to attend the funeral of Pope Francis due to the Canadian federal election.
Carney is expected to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Italian President Sergio Mattarella later in the day, with discussions likely to focus on trade, commerce, and cultural ties ahead of the G7 summit in Canada next month.
Accompanying Carney is a delegation of 13 Liberal MPs, including former cabinet minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and Ottawa MPs Mona Fortier and Marie-France Lalonde. Also part of the delegation are Senators Toni Varone and Tony Loffreda, as well as Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse and Métis National Council President Victoria Pruden.
The inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for Sunday, drawing world leaders and dignitaries from across the globe. Carney’s presence underscores Canada’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with the Vatican while also reflecting his personal faith and leadership.
