Chaos in Karachi: Over 200 Prisoners Escape Amid Earthquake Panic

In a dramatic turn of events, more than 200 inmates escaped from the District Malir prison in Karachi, Pakistan, after a series of earthquake tremors caused panic among prisoners and guards alike. The jailbreak unfolded late Monday night and continued into the early hours of Tuesday, as prisoners were temporarily allowed out of their cells for safety reasons.

Seizing the opportunity, the inmates overpowered prison staff, snatched weapons, and forced open the main gate after a shootout, evading paramilitary forces. The escape resulted in at least one prisoner being killed and three guards wounded.

Authorities have since launched a massive manhunt, with local police managing to recapture around 80 of the escapees. However, many remain at large, prompting officials to urge them to surrender or face severe legal consequences.

The jailbreak, described as one of the largest in Pakistan’s history, has raised concerns over prison security and emergency protocols. Officials are now investigating the incident, with provincial leaders criticizing the decision to allow prisoners out of their cells during the tremors.

As Karachi reels from the chaos, law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to restore order and track down the remaining fugitives.
