Trump and Qatar’s PM to Hold High-Stakes Talks on Gaza Ceasefire
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Washington today to discuss a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The meeting comes amid ongoing negotiations in Doha between Israeli and Hamas representatives, centered around a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day truce.
The proposed deal includes a phased release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli troops from key areas in Gaza, and increased humanitarian aid. Qatar, a key mediator in the conflict, has played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism earlier this week, stating that a breakthrough could be imminent. However, talks have stalled over disagreements regarding the extent of Israeli military withdrawal and guarantees for ending the war.
In addition to the ceasefire, Trump and Sheikh Mohammed are expected to discuss efforts to revive U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations, signaling a broader diplomatic agenda beyond the immediate crisis in Gaza.
The meeting is seen as a critical juncture in international efforts to end the violence that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced Gaza’s entire population.
