Belarus Weighs Nuclear Capability for Polonez Missile Systems Amid Rising Tensions

Belarusian members of the military take part in a Victory Day parade, which marks the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, in Minsk

Belarus is exploring the possibility of equipping its domestically produced Polonez multiple-launch rocket systems with nuclear warheads, according to senior security officials. The move comes as Minsk seeks to modernize its missile production and bolster defense capabilities in response to what it describes as growing military threats from neighboring NATO countries.

President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized the need to strengthen Belarus’ strategic arsenal, noting that the country is also considering integrating technology from Russia’s Oreshnik hypersonic missile into a joint weapons project. While Belarus does not possess its own nuclear weapons, it hosts Russian tactical nuclear arms under Moscow’s control.

The Polonez system, jointly developed with China and in service since 2016, has recently seen its range extended from 200 km to 300 km. Officials say discussions on nuclear armament are still in the exploratory phase, but the prospect has already raised concerns about regional security and the balance of power in Eastern Europe.
