Markets Rebound as Hopes for Iran–U.S. Dialogue Ease Geopolitical Tensions

U.S. stock futures edged higher on Wednesday as signs of potential diplomatic movement in the Iran–U.S. standoff helped calm volatile markets. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose about 0.3%, the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.5%, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures added 0.2% after a turbulent prior session.  The shift in sentiment followed reports that Iran has quietly approached the United States to discuss terms for ending the escalating conflict , a development that helped cool fears of further disruption in global energy markets. Israeli Forces Intensify Strikes on Gaza City Outskirts as Ground Offensive Looms

Smoke rises following an Israeli strike in Gaza City on 24 August.

Israeli forces have escalated bombardments on Gaza City’s suburbs, including Zeitoun, Shejaia, and Sabra, as the government pushes ahead with plans to seize the city. Witnesses reported relentless overnight shelling and airstrikes that destroyed homes, roads, and entire blocks, forcing more families to flee despite many having already been displaced multiple times.

The military has approved a large-scale operation, calling up around 60,000 reservists to join the campaign. Officials say the goal is to dismantle Hamas’s remaining strongholds, but humanitarian agencies warn the offensive will deepen Gaza’s already catastrophic crisis, with the UN documenting dozens of recent strikes on residential areas and shelters.

As the assault intensifies, aid groups report continued civilian casualties, including people killed while seeking food and water. With hundreds of thousands still trapped in the city, the coming weeks are expected to bring even heavier fighting and further displacement.
