Market Jitters Return as Cooler CPI Surprises Wall Street

A softer‑than‑expected U.S. Consumer Price Index reading sent a ripple through financial markets today, creating an unusual dynamic: good news on inflation, but renewed pressure on major stock indexes. A Cooling CPI, but a Nervous Market The latest CPI report showed inflation easing more than economists anticipated. Under normal circumstances, that would be a welcome sign—suggesting the Federal Reserve may have more room to consider rate cuts later in the year. But markets don’t always behave logically in the moment. Today, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq all slipped as investors reassessed what the data means for corporate earnings, interest‑rate expectations, and the broader economic outlook. Night of Bombardment Forces Gaza Families to Flee as Israelis Rally for Hostage Release

After a night of intense Israeli aerial and tank shelling on the outskirts of Gaza City, more Palestinian families have fled their homes, seeking safety further west or south in the enclave. Strikes hit neighborhoods including Sabra, Shejaia, Tuffah, and Jabalia, destroying roads and houses. Local health officials reported at least 34 deaths overnight, with 18 in the Gaza City area.

The Israeli military says its operations target weapons caches and tunnels used by militants, while preparing for what it calls a final offensive against Hamas in Gaza City. The bombardment came a day after an airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis killed at least 20 people, including journalists.

In Israel, thousands took part in a “Day of Disruption,” blocking roads and gathering outside defense headquarters to demand the release of hostages and an end to the war. Families of captives criticized the government for lacking a clear strategy, nearly two years into the conflict.

The war, which began on October 7, 2023, has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, deepening an already dire humanitarian crisis.
