June Jobs Report: What It Means for the Bank of Canada's July 15 Decision

Friday, July 10, 2026 Statistics Canada releases its June Labour Force Survey today, and the timing couldn't matter more. This is the last major economic data point before the Bank of Canada's next interest rate decision on July 15, 2026 — and whichever way the jobs numbers break, they'll shape what happens to borrowing costs for the rest of the summer. What Economists Are Expecting Consensus forecasts point to a modest but positive jobs report. Economists expect Canada added around 10,000 jobs in June, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 6.6%. That would follow a much stronger May, when the economy added 88,000 jobs and the unemployment rate actually fell by 0.3 percentage points. In other words, June's report is expected to show a cooling-off after May's surprise strength — not a reversal, but a return to a more modest pace of hiring. Turkey’s annual consumer price inflation slowed more than expected in July, dipping to 33.52%, its lowest level since November 2021, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Key Highlights:

  • Monthly inflation rose by 2.06%, below the forecasted 2.4%.
  • June’s annual inflation stood at 35.05%, showing a continued downward trend.
  • Despite the overall slowdown, housing prices surged by 5.78%, and education costs rose by 75.5% year-over-year.
  • Transport and tobacco prices also saw notable monthly increases of 2.89% and 5.69%, respectively.

Policy Response: On July 24, Turkey’s central bank cut its policy rate by 300 basis points, restarting an easing cycle aimed at supporting economic growth. Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek emphasized that the disinflation aligns with government targets and reaffirmed the commitment to achieving lasting price stability.

Outlook:

  • Inflation is projected to fall to 29.75% by year-end, according to a Reuters poll, though still above the central bank’s 24% forecast.
  • Officials remain optimistic, citing structural reforms and tighter monetary policy as key drivers of the improving inflation trajectory.

This latest data offers cautious optimism for Turkey’s economic outlook, though persistent price pressures in key sectors suggest challenges remain on the road to stability.
