Ukraine and Europe Press Trump to Hold Firm Before Alaska Talks with Putin

Two days before U.S. President Donald Trump’s high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European leaders are mounting an urgent diplomatic push to influence the talks.

Meeting in Berlin, Zelenskyy joined German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European heads in a series of virtual conferences aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s voice is not sidelined in any potential peace arrangement. The leaders fear Trump could agree to concessions — including territorial compromises — without Kyiv’s consent, a move they warn would embolden Moscow.

Trump has described the upcoming meeting as a “feel-out” session to gauge Putin’s willingness to end the war, now in its fourth year. However, his past remarks suggesting Ukraine may have to cede Russian-held territory have raised alarm in both Kyiv and European capitals.

On the ground, Russian forces have recently advanced in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, prompting evacuations of civilians. Zelenskyy insists there is “no sign” Moscow is preparing for genuine peace and has urged allies to maintain pressure on the Kremlin.

The Alaska summit — the first face-to-face meeting between a U.S. president and Putin since the 2022 invasion — could reshape the trajectory of the conflict. Whether it delivers progress toward peace or deepens divisions will soon be tested on the world stage.
