U.S. Limits Ukraine’s Use of Long-Range Missiles Amid Push for Peace Talks

The Pentagon has quietly restricted Ukraine from using U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia, according to U.S. officials cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The policy, in place since late spring, requires high-level approval from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before any such strikes can be carried out. On at least one occasion, Kyiv’s request to use the missiles against Russian territory was denied.

The move comes as President Donald Trump grows increasingly frustrated over the lack of progress in ending the three-year war. His administration has sought to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the negotiating table, but talks have stalled.

Officials say the restrictions also apply to certain European weapons systems that rely on U.S. intelligence or components, such as the UK’s Storm Shadow cruise missile. While Trump has publicly argued that Ukraine cannot win without taking the offensive, the Pentagon’s review process remains in place, limiting Kyiv’s ability to strike deep into Russian territory.
