Canadian MPs Urge Swift Action as Antisemitism Reaches Alarming Levels
Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, joined by 31 fellow caucus members, has issued a public call for urgent measures to combat what they describe as a “deplorable” and increasingly “normalized” rise in antisemitism across Canada. The statement follows a shocking incident in Ottawa, where a Jewish woman in her 70s was stabbed in a grocery store known for its large kosher section. Police have charged a 71-year-old man and are treating the attack as a hate-motivated crime.
The MPs’ letter cites a surge in hate crimes against Jewish Canadians, with Statistics Canada reporting 920 such incidents last year — the highest among all religious groups. The signatories are urging the federal government to implement recommendations from a House of Commons justice committee report, including increased funding for policing and prosecution of hate crimes, and swift changes to the Criminal Code to prevent intimidation outside places of worship, schools, and community centres.
Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the attack as “senseless” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stand with the Jewish community against hate. The call to action comes ahead of Parliament’s return on September 15, with MPs framing the issue as a responsibility for all Canadians, institutions, and levels of government to address.
