Greece Pledges Safe Passage for Gaza Flotilla Amid Rising Tensions

Crew members stand next to a helicopter aboard Spain's warship 'Furor', a military vessel set to join in a supporting role the Global Sumud Flotilla seeking to deliver aid to Gaza after it was attacked by drones off Greece, as they wait for the departure, at the port of Cartagena, Spain September 25, 2025

Greece has announced it will guarantee the safe passage of vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla currently sailing in its waters en route to Gaza. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis confirmed that Athens has informed Israel of the presence of Greek citizens aboard the flotilla, which consists of around 50 civilian boats carrying activists, lawyers, and humanitarian workers, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

The flotilla’s mission is to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. Recent reports of drone attacks on the vessels near the Greek island of Gavdos have heightened concerns, prompting Italy to dispatch a naval ship to assist. While Greece has not joined Italian and Spanish naval escorts, Gerapetritis emphasized that authorities remain on “full alert” and will conduct a full inquiry into the incidents.

Israel has strongly criticized the flotilla, accusing participants of aiding Hamas, while activists insist their mission is peaceful and humanitarian. The situation underscores growing international scrutiny of the Gaza blockade and the risks faced by those attempting to break it.
