Tragedy at Vijay’s Rally: Stampede in Tamil Nadu Leaves Dozens Dead
A political rally for Tamil actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as Vijay, ended in tragedy on Saturday when a massive crowd surge led to a deadly stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu.
According to state officials, at least 39–40 people lost their lives, including several children, while more than 50 others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Witnesses reported that the chaos began when Vijay, addressing tens of thousands of supporters from atop his campaign vehicle, attempted to leave the venue. As fans surged forward, barricades collapsed and panic spread, leading to the deadly crush.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin confirmed the casualties and announced financial aid for the victims’ families. A judicial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the lapses in crowd control.
Vijay, who retired from acting in 2024 to launch his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, expressed his grief on social media, writing that his “heart is shattered” and that he was in “unbearable pain and sorrow.” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called the incident “deeply saddening.”
The tragedy has reignited concerns over safety at large-scale political gatherings in India, where massive turnouts often overwhelm local infrastructure and crowd management measures.
