UK to Recognise Palestinian State After Trump’s Departure, Starmer to Announce Before UN Summit

Britain is set to formally recognise a Palestinian state this weekend, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expected to make the announcement once U.S. President Donald Trump concludes his state visit.

The move, timed to avoid overshadowing a joint press conference at Chequers, comes ahead of next week’s United Nations General Assembly, where other nations including France, Canada, and Australia are also preparing similar declarations.

Starmer had warned in July that recognition would proceed unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire, revived prospects for a two-state solution, and halted annexation of the West Bank — conditions that remain unmet amid Israel’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza.

The decision risks further straining relations with Washington, which has voiced strong opposition, warning it could be seen as rewarding Hamas. Israel has also condemned the move, while Labour MPs and international allies have urged swift action to preserve the viability of a two-state solution.
