Utah Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty in Charlie Kirk Assassination Case

A police mugshot shows Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the fatal shooting of US conservative commentator Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University, in Orem, Utah.

Utah prosecutors have formally charged 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson with the aggravated murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, announcing their intent to seek the death penalty if he is convicted. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot last week while speaking to a crowd of about 3,000 at Utah Valley University.

Authorities allege Robinson fired a single rifle shot from a rooftop, striking Kirk in the neck before fleeing the scene. He was captured two days later following a 33-hour manhunt, after relatives and a family friend alerted police to his alleged confession.

In addition to aggravated murder, Robinson faces multiple charges including obstruction of justice and witness tampering, with prosecutors accusing him of ordering his roommate to delete incriminating messages. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray described the killing as “an American tragedy” and emphasized that his decision to pursue capital punishment was based solely on the evidence and nature of the crime.

Robinson remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance via video link. The case has sparked nationwide debate over political violence and deepening partisan divisions.
