Ukraine Moves to Secure 25 Patriot Systems in Long-Term Defense Deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that Kyiv is preparing a contract to acquire 25 U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, a move aimed at significantly strengthening the country’s protection against Russian missile and drone attacks.

Speaking to reporters, Zelenskiy said the systems would be delivered gradually over several years, with Ukraine seeking priority access from European partners already in line for the advanced technology. The Patriot system is regarded as one of the most effective defenses against ballistic missiles, which travel at hypersonic speeds and have been a major threat to Ukraine’s infrastructure and cities.

The deal, once finalized, would mark one of Ukraine’s largest defense procurements since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Zelenskiy emphasized that while the process is complex and long-term, the agreement represents a critical step toward ensuring Ukraine’s security in the years ahead.
